BDA Launches Free Eye Screening Clinic
The Bermuda Diabetes Association [BDA] will be offering free retinal screening to anyone who has diabetes during the week of March 13 to March 17.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Diabetes Association [BDA] will be offering free retinal screening to anyone who has diabetes during the week of March 13 – 17. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness and vision impairment amongst people who have diabetes. Early detection and intervention, through retinal screening, are important to prevent vision loss.
“The symptoms of retinopathy often do not present themselves until the condition is well advanced and damage to the retina has occurred.”
Lori Rockhead, the executive director of the Bermuda Diabetes Association, said, “In Bermuda, many people with diabetes have never had their eyes screened, although they have had diabetes for several years. Others may have missed regular screening during the height of COVID-19. BDA is offering the week-long series of clinics so it’s easy for persons with diabetes to access screening.
“BDA is excited to collaborate with Diabetologist, Professor David Owens and his team of retinopathy specialists from the University of Swansea Medical School and Queen’s University [Belfast], who are volunteering their time to conduct the Retinal Screening Clinics.
“We’ve received incredible support from the Bermuda Hospitals Board, Vision Bermuda, and local doctors.”
Sara Bosch de Noya, Diabetes Educator, said, “The test is painless. The screening involves taking an image of the eyes using a specialized camera. After dilating the eyes, images will be taken of the back of the eyes to check for any changes or warning signs.”
The spokesperson said, “The BDA is thankful for the generous support from community partners CHUBB, the Lions Clubs of Bermuda, and the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club. The trustees of the CHUBB Charitable Foundation believe this program to be a critical component of care needed in the management and treatment of diabetes.
“To learn more about diabetic retinopathy and schedule an appointment, you can go to www.diabetes.bm. Retinal screening is being offered free of charge to anyone with diabetes [Type 1 or Type 2] and who has not had a retinal screening test for more than one year.
“Early detection is key to avoiding vision loss. Please make your appointment today.
“The Retinal Screening Clinic will be held at the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s Resource Centre, 22 Princess Street, Hamilton.
“Please call us at 441 297 8427 or visit the BDA online if you have any further questions.”
