Footballing legend Clyde Best’s surprise visit at Clearwater Middle School’s assembly on Monday enthralled students and staff alike.
Mr. Best — one of the first Black players at a top-flight English club — was invited to speak as a highlight of the school’s Black History Month celebrations.
He recounted his pioneering days at the West Ham Football Club, spoke about having to deal with racist threats, and encouraged the students to do their best in school, especially those who want to be professional players.
Clearwater Middle School principal Lisa Swan said, “It was a wonderful opportunity to bring in a living Bermudian legend to share his life with our students and for them to interact with him. What we were left with from Mr. Bests’s visit is when he said, ‘Football is for a part of your life; education is for all your life.’ What a way to end Black History Month at Clearwater Middle School.”
Mr. Best, elected to the Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame in its inaugural class, also touched on playing in the Netherlands with Feyenoord and for several clubs in the United States.
After speaking, the students lined up to get their photo taken with the Bermudian legend, and had the opportunity to talk with him. He also looked at some of the Black History Month murals, including one that featured him and several other Bermudian professional footballers, such as Shaun Goater, Nahki Wells, Kyle Lightbourne, and David Bascome.
