Body Found, Police Launch Murder Investigation

February 13, 2023

[Updated] The police confirmed they have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a male’s body in the Friswell’s Hill area in Pembroke, and noted that area residents may have heard gunshots in the area last night.

Update: Acting Detective Inspector Jason Smith said, “Approximately 1:00pm this afternoon, the Bermuda Police Service received several 911 calls reporting the discovery of a male body in the area on Friswell’s Hill behind me, down through a residential lane. Police officers attended the location where they confirmed the discovery, and as a result of that, we have now launched a murder investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the male’s body.

“We do believe, based upon our inquiries conducted so far, that area residents, in particular last night, might have heard gunshots in this particular area. We are specifically appealing today to the members of our community and those that live in this neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods that if you heard any gunshots last night…early hours of this morning, or if you have seen any suspicious activity, whether they’re motorcycles or persons congregating, we are appealing today and asking that you make contact with us so that we can advance this investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked contact the main police number 295-0011, call Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 or provide the information to a police officer you know.

Update: Shadow Minister for National Security Michael Dunkley said, “People have been expressing condolences for murdered young men for many years and at the same time calling for a halt to the violence. However sadly once again today another young person had been murdered.

“It often seems that some people are numb to the violence or turn a blind eye to those who they know are involved in gangs and guns.

“We must do better. Too many families are hurting; too many young lives have been cut short and this is the second time this neighbourhood has had to experience such trauma in 15 years—two times too many.

“I urge members of the community to speak up and bring the murderer to justice. I also urge people to take a stand and help anyone impacted by gangs and guns to find a better life.”

Update 6.08pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13th, 2023, a member of the public contacted police to report an unresponsive male lying on the ground in a secluded overgrown area off Border Lane South and Friswells Road, Pembroke.

“Police and other emergency personnel responded and were taken to the area where upon arrival, they observed the male appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound.

“An on call physician attended the scene and confirmed the male was deceased a short time later. This matter is now being investigated as a murder. The first for 2023.

“There are reports circulating that police received several calls about gunshots heard shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, February 12th, 2023, in a number of unspecified locations in Pembroke Parish.

“Contrary to these reports, several units responded to the information received, vague though it may have been, and conducted extensive searches of the Happy Valley, Parsons Road and Fentons Drive areas, as well as Friswell’s Hill and other locations in North Hamilton. However, there was no evidence found to substantiate these reports.

“Both matters are now under investigation and anyone with information, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, is asked to contact Detective Inspector, Jason Smith, of the Serious Crime Unit, on 717-0864, 247-1218 or via email, jsmith2@bps.bm.

“You may also call the main police number, 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers number, 800-8477. If you are more comfortable doing so, we urge you to please provide the information to a police officer you know.”
