HRC: Participate In Human Rights Consultation
The Human Rights Commission is preparing policy recommendations to submit to the Government of Bermuda and said they “seek the participation of members of the public in an island-wide consultation.”
Lisa Reed, Executive Officer of the Human Rights Commission stated, “We invite members of the public to complete the survey. We want to hear from anyone who has experienced or is currently experiencing discrimination or harassment in their quest for somewhere to live.”
Ms. Reed continued, “According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 1.8 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing and discrimination in housing is one of the most pervasive and persistent barriers to the fulfilment of the Right to Adequate Housing today.”
“The Bermuda Human Rights Commission notes that housing provides stability, dignity, and security for an individual or family. We believe housing is a human right. Inadequate housing impacts a person’s health, work, education, relationships, and may result in a diminished quality of life. Failing to recognize, protect, and fulfil the right to adequate housing results in the violation of fundamental rights which includes the Right to Work, Education, Health, and Security.”
Ms. Reed added, “We look forward to hearing from as many people as possible. The Human Rights Commission is committed to ensuring everyone who wants to complete the survey can do so. Let us know if you, or someone you know, needs help to complete the survey.”
The spokesperson said, “There are several ways to complete the questionnaire:
- click on the link: forms.office.com/r/UE64hwj1Ue
- visit our website: www.humanrights.bm
- phone our office: 441 295-5859
- come into our office at: 32 Victoria Street, Milner Place, Ground Floor, Hamilton [across from Sears].
Lisa Reed concluded, “The responses we receive will help us to develop the policy recommendations, therefore we want to ensure that as many perspectives as possible are represented. Questionnaire submissions will be anonymous. Our recommendations to the government will not reveal or disclose personal information or sensitive personal information. The deadline for submission is April 7, 2023 at 5pm.”
It’s a safe bet the LGBTQ+ community will not reply to this.
If it does, the PLP Government will just amend the Human Rights Act to take away even more rights they should enjoy as “humans”
More hypocrisy from Bermuda.
Offer does not apply to gay residents.
