Rotary Seeks Funding For School In Zimbabwe March 2023

“In 2015 Rotarian Youth Director Cathy Bassett attended the Rotary U.N. Convention in New York and brought the Interact Club back to Bermuda. Since then, hundreds of youth from both private and public schools, along with home schools, have joined Rotary Interact, and have carried out scores of service projects locally and globally.

“Along with a community-based club, Hamilton Rotary Interact Club – sponsored by Hamilton and St. George’s Rotary Clubs – Interact Clubs have been established at Mount St. Agnes Academy, CedarBridge Academy, and Somersfield Academy. Plans are being made to establish more clubs in high schools on the island.

“Currently, Hamilton Rotary Interact Club is seeking corporate funding to help provide running water for a rural school in Zimbabwe. Hygiene and consumption of clean drinking water is compromised as there is no running water at the school. Children have to walk for miles daily to the closest village that has running water to fill buckets and transport them, oftentimes on their heads, back to their school.

“The Hamilton Rotary Interact Club is seeking corporate partner sponsorship to raise funds to bore pipes in the ground of the adopted school to reach water level and introduce solar panels so that sanitation, hygiene and water consumption as well as organic gardening is possible.

“The Hamilton Rotary Interact Club invites our business corporate friends to hold a denim day for our adopted Zimbabwe school.

“The project is headed by Hamilton Rotary Interact Club International Affairs Director, 17-year-old CedarBridge Academy senior Diamond DeShields.

“Diamond is preparing to enter university in the fall to pursue a degree in International Business, majoring in Actuarial Science.

“She is being mentored by Rotarian Adviser Dr. Taka Mubarra, who is presently employed at the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

“Letters of outreach will be sent to the corporate partners to invite staff to participate in a $5 denim day. Boards of directors may wish to match funds.

“The target Diamond is working towards is $20,000.

“Letters will go out during the week of March 12th, 2023. The motto of rotary is ‘service above self.’

“President of Hamilton Rotary and St. George’s Rotary Sponsor Clubs of Hamilton Rotary Interact Club are Rotarians Rick Richardson and Mike Dickinson. District Governor of District 7230 is Rotarian Martin Shullman. Hamilton Rotary Club is a registered charity.

“For community members who wish to support Diamond, the Hamilton Rotary Club account number is: Bank of Butterfield 200 06 060 378871 100.”
