The MarketPlace has provided 10 pallets of food —  comprising over 750 cases of food staples — to support the Salvation Army’s North Street feeding programs.

A spokesperson said, “The MarketPlace, a cornerstone of Bermuda’s grocery retail community, is delivering urgent support to our neighbors at the Salvation Army’s North Street citadel location, which recently reported critically low food supplies for its community feeding programs.

“The MarketPlace has coordinated the delivery of ten pallets of essential food items that arrived from the United States. This substantial donation, comprising over 750 cases of food staples, will immediately restock the Salvation Army’s shelves and support their mission of serving up to 800 people weekly through their family services and feeding programmes.”

“We’re all neighbors in Bermuda, and when we learned about the Salvation Army’s situation, we knew we needed to help,” says Seth Stutzman, President of The MarketPlace. “As a family grocery store that has served Bermuda for generations, we believe in taking care of each other. This donation is simply about neighbors helping neighbors.”

Vernon Hassell, Vice President of Purchasing and Procurement at The MarketPlace, explains the carefully curated donation, “We specifically selected non-perishable items that provide balanced nutrition and versatile meal options. From proteins like beans to wholesome grains and fruits, these staples will help the Salvation Army prepare nutritious meal hampers and provide essential pantry items to families in need. We chose items with longer shelf lives to ensure the Salvation Army can manage their inventory effectively over time.

“The Salvation Army is very grateful to The MarketPlace for this meaningful donation that will help so many across Bermuda,” said Captain Dennis Maybury, Public Relations officer of The Salvation Army.

The spokesperson said, “The donation, comprising a full container with 10 pallets of food, includes essential items specifically chosen to support families and the Salvation Army’s feeding programs:

  • More than 150 cases of pasta, including whole wheat spaghetti and elbow macaroni
  • 110 cases of pasta sauce
  • 84 cases of kidney beans
  • 85 cases of green beans
  • 56 cases of white rice
  • Over 200 cases of fruit
  • Cases of breakfast items including cereals
  • Cases of cookies
  • Additional pantry staples

“These items were specifically selected for their nutritional value and long shelf life, ensuring the Salvation Army can provide balanced, nutritious meal options to families in need over an extended period. The focus on non-perishable staples allows for efficient storage and consistent availability for the community feeding programs.

“Major Darryl Simms, Corps Officer and Pastor at the Salvation Army’s North Street facility, had highlighted the unprecedented demand for assistance, noting empty shelves for the first time in 18 months. Today’s donation from The MarketPlace directly addresses this critical situation.”

“This effort reflects the heart of who we are as Bermudians,” adds Stutzman. “When one of us needs help, we all step up. We hope our action encourages others in our business community to join in supporting vital organizations like the Salvation Army.”

Ronnette Burgess, Vice President of Human Resources at The MarketPlace, emphasizes the company’s ongoing commitment to community support, “Our team members live and work in this community, and many of us have seen firsthand how the Salvation Army touches lives. This donation represents not just our corporate commitment but the personal dedication of our entire MarketPlace family to supporting our neighbors in need.”

“The generosity of The MarketPlace will help alleviate the daily burdens faced by those striving to make ends meet,” says Captain Dennis Maybury. “Together we can provide encouragement to those facing challenges and give hope when it matters most.”
