UK, US, Bermuda Officials On Security Exercise

March 22, 2023

Senior Government representatives from Bermuda, the UK, and the US convened this week to “work through how rapid international assistance could be provided to Bermuda in the unlikely event of a severe incident.”

A Government spokesperson said, “Today’s [March 22] tabletop exercise follows a series of exercises and training courses supported by the UK, designed to increase Bermuda’s own resilience and ability to respond to significant incidents.

“Participating in the event were the Royal Bermuda Regiment, the Bermuda Police Service, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, other Government departments and agencies and their UK and US colleagues.”

Governor Rena Lalgie said: “I am delighted that this week’s exercise will build on the long-term cooperation between Bermuda, the UK and the US. Exercises like this enable us all to be prepared to respond effectively in the most difficult situations.”

Minister of National Security Michael Weeks added: “The safety and security of the people of Bermuda is of utmost importance and it is comforting to know that should we need external support, both the UK and US agencies are there for us.

“There is strength in unity, and by uniting Bermuda, the United Kingdom and the United States in our efforts to prepare for a major incident we will meet our Ministry mission of working together to keep you safe.”

US Consul General Karen Grissette said: “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to working collaboratively with the United Kingdom and Bermuda in the event of a crisis. The United States has no stronger partnership than that with the United Kingdom.

“Cooperation and integration among partner nations is critical to confronting transnational challenges and the United States continues to value its longstanding relationship with Bermuda.”
