Fundraiser For Therapeutic Riding On April 29
WindReach is set to celebrate and highlight the impact that Therapeutic Riding has had on the lives of individuals living with diverse support needs by hosting “An Evening at Royal Ascot” a fundraising event to celebrate 50 Years of Therapeutic Riding in Bermuda on April 29, 2023.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda is the fourth oldest country to engage individuals in this form of therapy. We follow behind Denmark, UK and Germany. Therapeutic Riding was formally introduced to Bermuda by The Bermuda Riding for The Disabled Association in 1973 and was first housed at a local riding school. It was granted charitable status and accepted as an Associated Overseas Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association in the U.K. The Association then became a limited company and changed its name to the Bermuda Riding for the Disabled Ltd. in October 1995.
“In December 1996, the BRD was fortunate enough to be given its own custom-built facility at WindReach by the late Mr. Alexander ‘Sandy’ Mitchell OBE [WindReach’s founder] and the WindReach Trustees. In 2009, after thirteen years of paying the annual rent of one horseshoe, Bermuda Riding for the Disabled and WindReach [formerly known as WindReach Recreational Village] merged and Therapeutic Riding has been a key pillar in WindReach’s Programme Menu since that time.”
Samantha Hillier, Therapeutic Riding Programme Manager stated, ”WindReach is such a magical place and we’re so excited to celebrate 50 years of Therapeutic Riding in Bermuda. This is incredible and such a huge milestone for our little island. There are so many amazing people that have been part of the programme over the years from therapists to instructors, participants, parents and volunteers.
“We have riders who have consistently been riding within the programme for decades and volunteers who have been part of the programme since the beginning. It’s amazing to see the history, talk to everyone involved over the years, and to have the privilege to continue to grow this amazing programme. We couldn’t be where we are without the support of our amazing volunteers, as well as our amazing donors over the years. This celebration is for everyone! Please join us on April 29th at WindReach!”
Tina Nash, Executive Director went on to say, “What an incredible time this is for us at WindReach and for Bermuda! Only 3 other countries have been able to celebrate this incredible milestone – 50 years of providing Therapeutic Riding to their community living with diverse support needs.
“We are so very proud and thankful of all of the individuals that have helped to make this happen for our wonderful participants over the past 50 years. The spokesperson said, “‘An Evening at Royal Ascot’ is a fundraising event with a Royal Flair. Guests are invited to dress to impress in hats and fascinators as we go to the races in Royal Ascot style. The event promises to bring the excitement of Royal Ascot horse racing and more.
“There will be a total of seven horse races featured on the big screen and guests can place their wagers and have the opportunity to win delightful prizes. Guests will enjoy a gourmet buffet exquisitely crafted by the chefs at MEF who have added a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options as well as a premier selection of wines and spirits by The Tasting Room working with Pitt & Company. This action packed, fundraising event will reach its high point with Bermuda’s best party band, Working Title, playing hits from the past five decades.
