Domico Watson achieved his goal of raising more than £2,000 [$2,492] for Fight for Sight – a UK charity dedicated to funding pioneering sight loss research – after running the TCS London Marathon on Sunday [April 23].
Watson was running in memory of his late grandfather, Edward “Sonny” Watson, who suffered from glaucoma – a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, causing vision loss.
The 30-year-old, whose parents Mike Watson and Donna Raynor were two of the island’s top middle-distance runners, finished 1,629th overall in a time of 2hr 51min 39sec.
He was the 1,570th male finisher and came 998th in the 18-39 age group.
He wrote on Facebook: “I have wanted to run the London Marathon for a number of years, and it was everything I imagined.
[It was] made even more special by the opportunity to represent Fight for Sight and celebrate the amazing work they do for visual impairment. I want to thank all those that helped me reach beyond my donation of £2,000 [$2,492].”
He added: “Tower Bridge was my favourite moment – absolutely amazing sights and sounds.
“[I] tried to maintain my rhythm and pace up Canary Wharf [and] saw plenty of others starting to work hard, but I was gearing up for the final 10k [6.2 miles] left and time to go to work and push as hard as possible.
“[I] definitely felt some time was lost weaving through the masses and dealing with the weather at the start, but a great effort and such an amazing day. Loved the family, friends and supporters along the route and cheering at home.”
