A local women’s cricket team – the Bermuda Triangle Gems – tested themselves against overseas competition at the recent Georgia Women Cricket Association’s tenth annual T20 tournament.

Seven players from Warwick Workmen’s Club women’s team – Chantel Oosthuizen, who captained the side, Karen Hodgson, Yasla Simmons, Antoinette Robain, Tracey Jackman, Rebecca Schoeler and Ashley Borges – teamed up with five guest players at the tournament, which also featured the Belizean Royal Strikers and the Atlanta Pearls.

The Gems played four matches, losing twice to the Pearls and once to the Strikers before defeating the same opposition by five wickets in their final game. Borges top-scored for Bermuda, hitting 61 off 42 balls.

They also won the True Sportsman and Team Spirit award at the two-day tournament, where local umpires Precious Smith and Linnell Williams officiated.

Kellie Smith, the Bermuda Cricket Board chairperson of the development programme for youth, women and girls, said the players paid for themselves, with the BCB covering the kit costs and the tournament entry fee.

“It was a great experience for the players to play overseas,” Smith told Bernews. “They said the tournament went well, was very organised, and they had a blast!”

The first Bermuda T20 Women’s League starts on Saturday [June 10].

Five clubs – Cleveland County, St David’s, St George’s, Warwick Workmen’s Club, and Western Stars – are confirmed participants.
