Immersive Art Installation Opens At BNG
Artist Catherine Lapsley has expanded one of her signature grid paintings to create an immersive installation hand painted directly onto the walls of the BNG Project Space.
A spokesperson said, “Kinesis, which is on display at the Bermuda National Gallery through to mid-September, is part of her ongoing In My Life series, which she began in 2013, and builds on Free Flow, which was exhibited in the 2022 Bermuda Biennial.”
Ms. Lapsley said, “For the past several years I have been exploring how to create life and movement within a two-dimensional space by restricting myself to using a grid system as my starting point. This challenge gives me a place from which it seems anything can happen, in order to create movement and interest, encouraging each viewer to interpret the story within the painting in their own way.”
The spokesperson said, “Catherine Lapsley [born in 1946, Bermudian/British] attended Kingston College of Art in England, studying art and design. She focused on Graphic Design and, after graduation, worked in London for several innovative designers and architects before moving to Bermuda, where she forged a career in the design and non-profit sectors.
“Primarily a painter, her artistic pursuits have included printmaking and photography, as well as corporate logo and visual identity design. Her work is held in both private and public collections, including the Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club and Butterfield.”
BNG Trustee Mitchell Klink, who curated the exhibition, said, “In Kinesis, the leap from Catherine Lapsley’s canvas to the world around us is not an imaginary invitation. The artist has created the work in the BNG Project Space, allowing the public to witness her process in action. We don’t have to imagine her canvas paintings in three dimensions – she has created a three-dimensional world for us to step into within the gallery.”
The spokesperson said, “Six canvasses have been embedded into the walls of the Project Space, which will live on as individual artworks after the installation closes. Kinesis: A Catherine Lapsley Project is on display in the BNG Project Space at the Bermuda National Gallery through to mid-September.”
