Review: ‘Pure’ Carnival In Bermuda Party
[Written by Mikaela Ian Pearman]
Carnival in Bermuda was one for the books! Countless parties and endless vibes for four days straight.
One event that gets me excited year after year is Pure [view photo gallery here], which is organized by Wild Apache Promotions. I’ve been going to this event since its inception, so I was looking forward to it once again this year.
Pure always brings the vibes with top notch DJs and performers, both Bermudian and international. This year was no exception and there was a new venue. Traditionally the event has been held under the big tent at National Stadium, but this year, Pure was held at Albouy’s Point and I have to say the venue change elevated the event.
I arrived close to midnight and it turned out to be the perfect time as my favourite DJ, Rusty G was on stage with Mista Genius. The pair was a great combination as the crowd danced, waved rags and had a great time during their set. It’s been awesome to see Mista Genius transition into Soca Genius as he traditionally was a dancehall DJ.
Before they left the stage, they played Bermudian artist Fire Wayne’s new song “One Blood” and he ran up on stage to party with the crowd. As I told him afterwards, Wayne deserves his flowers and I’m so happy that Bermudians love the music he’s been putting out with RTwoG2 [aka Rusty G].
Another Bermudian artist PonaFlex came on stage to perform a few of his songs including “All Over Yuh” and got a great reception from the crowd.
The headliner for the event was soca artist Motto from St. Lucia. It started raining when he got on stage but that didn’t stop the energy or the vibe. He jumped on stage to his hit song “Uber Everywhere” with DJ Kevin Crown spinning for him.
Motto moved effortlessly into “Big Ride”, “Outsider”, One Woman”, “Shots (One For Di Road)”, “Horn” and many more. His energy was infectious and he had the crowd in a frenzy the whole time. He even continued as the rain fell and really turned the party up a few notches.
DJ Avalanche came on after Motto and revellers joined him on stage to dance in the rain from soca to dancehall to hip hop. Unfortunately the heavens opened and the rain came pouring down, which ended the party promptly at 2am.
Overall, Pure was a fantastic event with a great layout, gorgeous set-up and was well organized. Hopefully next year we don’t have all this insane rain so we can enjoy the fetes as much as possible. Well done, Wild Apache Promotions. I will see you next year.
