WISTA Recognises SSL & Donates To Endeavour
WISTA Bermuda celebrated the “stellar services” of Stevedoring Services Limited and also donated $1300 toward the 2024 Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme.
A spokesperson said, “WISTA Bermuda, a networking organization whose mission is to support women at the management level in the maritime industry, held an award reception on 14 June 2023 to recognise organizations making a positive mark in Bermuda’s shipping and trading industry.
“It is a strategic imperative of WISTA Bermuda to champion organizations that have a demonstrable impact on Bermuda’s shipping sector. To this end, as part of its annual social giving, WISTA Bermuda recognized both Stevedoring Services Ltd. [SSL] and the Endeavour charitable organisation.
“In terms of dedicated service, Stevedoring Services Ltd’s example of excellence is unparalleled. Stevedoring Services Ltd. [SSL] was awarded a terminal operator’s license by the Corporation of Hamilton to perform cargo operations and various dockside functions.
“SSL is open for business up to 14 hours each day, 362 days each year. As Bermuda resets its post-pandemic economy, the 52 highly trained stevedores work to keep Bermuda docks not only efficient [minimizing vessel port time] but a model for workplace safety, fairness and innovation.
“Characterised by their strong work ethic, depth of talent and camaraderie, the SSL team employ potentially hazardous equipment in the execution of over 34,217 container moves per year.
“Put simply, with 95% of the Islands imported cargo flowing through the Hamilton Docks, SSL both drives Bermuda’s economy and serves as a reliable barometer of the islands fiscal health.”
On behalf of WISTA Bermuda, Cheryl Hayward-Chew, director and founding member, commended Stevedoring Services “for over half a century of dedicated service to Bermuda and extraordinary contribution to the Island’s economy”.
The spokesperson said, “In terms of attracting a diverse talent pool to experience the maritime industry, Endeavour sets the standard given its reach and significance.
“WISTA Bermuda’s charitable giving to Endeavour aligns with WISTA’s passions and stated mission to minimise the gender leadership gap in the maritime, trading and logistics sectors.
“Heather Cooper, director and president of WISTA Bermuda, presented a cheque of $1300 to Endeavour. The donation is intended to foster the training and development of local talent, ideally a female, by way of participation in the 2024 Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme.”
Jennifer Pitcher, executive acknowledged that “Endeavour is encouraging and promoting gender equity in the sport of sailing and more widely in the maritime industry by exposing all youth to the joys of sailing and fostering an appreciation for learning about STEAM education, ocean conservation and maritime careers. ”
“We appreciate the generous support from Endeavour’s valued donors and supporters who enable us to positively impact diverse young lives across Bermuda. We are grateful to WISTA Bermuda for their kind donation in support of the Endeavour Maritime Career Springboard Programme enabling us to award a scholarship to a female Bermudian in the future.”
