Achilles Bay Beach Project Halted For Six Weeks
“The project to restore public access to Achilles Bay remains a priority and will be back on track as soon as possible,” said Minister of Public Works Lt/Col David Burch.
A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister’s comments comes as the Ministry of Public Works updates the public on the status of a Government project to restore public access to Achilles Bay in St. George’s.
“The public will recall the announcement in May that the 11-week construction project involving Smith Hauling and Excavating to commence repair works at the beach opposite Fort St. Catherine would start soon after.
“However, upon excavation, the contractor found no solid rock beneath the steps to construct upon, and thus, the project had to be halted for a redesign.
“It is now going back through the planning process, which is expected to take six weeks to complete. This delay will mean the beach will not be ready for public use in time for the Cup Match period as initially hoped.”
Minister Burch added: “I know this news will disappoint people, especially residents in St. George’s who were eagerly looking forward to restoring access to the beach.
“I would ask that residents continue to be patient as we do everything we can to ensure that the new walkway access we are building meets all of the safety requirements and can be built to last for many years to come.”
So now both St. Catherine’s beach and Achilles Bay are closed to the public?
St. Catherine’s is open. Public access is on the fort side. large car park now also.

If it takes six weeks to get a revision to a set of steps being built approved, how is it that the massive Southampton Princess project and all the new development is supposed to get approved so quickly? Or has it already? Things that make you go hmmmmmm. Can someone just tell us the truth!

So, the cost of putting some steps in is going to dramatically increase, surprise surprise. PLP doing what the PLP does.
How about forgetting this unnecessarily frivolous vanity project and using the resources to resurface the roads. Do the basic necessities first.
It will take six weeks just to get the paperwork in order for a set of steps.

Next summer will roll around and the job will still not be done.
Burch needs to go. His baggage gets in the way of everything.
Lt. Co. Burch has been a PLP stalwart for decades and must be properly rewarded for that.
