Bermuda archer Bernard Wade III is a contender for a podium finish at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Island.

That is the view of Ross Roberts, the team coach, who expects solid performances from Wade and team-mate Robert O’Connor, who are competing in the single WA 1440 men’s recurve and the men’s 720 recurve.

O’Conner and Wade represented Bermuda at the Island Games in Gotland, Sweden, in 2017; Wade won the silver medal with Tiffney Slaton in the mixed recurve head-to-head team knockout competition.

In the men’s recurve 720, Wade came seventh, and O’Connor placed twelfth.

“Bernard is a potential medal shooter,” Roberts told Bernews. “Both guys have been training regularly and putting the time in.

“They have previous Games experience, which should be helpful.”

Roberts said he expects some stiff competition from the other islands in Guernsey.

“We stand on par with a lot of the islands and know we can be competitive,” he said.

Both archers prepared for the Games at the Vegas Shoot in Las Vegas in February.

“They had some pretty good results,” Roberts added. “It was a big shoot with nearly 800 archers competing.

“We don’t have big competitions locally, so we have to get overseas so our guys can get used to shooting around many people.”
