Benevides & Lee Earn Butterfield Scholarships
Butterfield has awarded its annual scholarships, with Brianna Benevides earning the $30,000 Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship, while Aaliyah Lee received the $25,000 Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children.
A spokesperson said, “Butterfield has awarded its annual scholarships to five promising students, including two talented Bermudians, Brianna Benevides and Aaliyah Lee, who will receive a combined $55,000 between them for the upcoming academic year. These scholarships can be maintained for up to four academic years.
“Brianna Benevides has been awarded the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship. Offered since 1978, this scholarship honours Butterfield’s late Chairman, Sir Harry D. Butterfield and grants this year’s recipient $30,000 per year towards her studies of Management at Dalhousie University.
“A student of Mount St Agnes Academy, Ms Benevides plans to pursue a dual postgraduate degree in Law [Juris Doctor] and Business [MBA] once she has completed her undergraduate degree. In her down time, she is a passionate netball player, coaches local primary school teams in the sport and has refereed for the Bermuda Netball Association.
“Aaliyah Lee received the Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children [Atlantic], one of three regional scholarships available to Butterfield employees who are parents or guardians of a student pursuing post-secondary education. Ms Lee has been awarded $25,000 per academic year towards her study of Spanish Teacher Education at Kean University.
“A graduate of Bermuda College, she aims to be a high school Spanish teacher and has already started tutoring Spanish-speaking students in mathematics during the course of her studies. Outside of her education, Ms Lee is a contributing member of the community, taking part in Youth Parliament, Student Council and Word Youth Group, as well as volunteering with the Department of Health.”
Michael Neff, Butterfield’s Managing Director in Bermuda, said: “Congratulations to Brianna and Aaliyah from all of us at Butterfield. Both of these women have set themselves apart as exceptional students and valuable members of our community. We are proud to be able to play a part in supporting their future and look forward to following their successes.
“Education is an important factor for economic growth, which is why Butterfield has invested almost $2.5 million in scholarships since 2018. We hope to empower the next generation to pursue their academic ambitions and pave the way for their bright careers. In addition to the annual scholarship programme, we are pleased to provide a range of opportunities for young people, from summer internships to our graduate talent programme for those looking to pursue careers in finance.”
The spokesperson said, “The scholarship programme offers financial assistance to a number of promising students each year based on academic excellence, community involvement and sporting attainments, financial need and a candidate’s demonstrated ability to lead.
“Applications for the 2024 scholarship programme will open later in the year. For more information on scholarships, internships and other educational and career opportunities, please visit www.butterfieldgroup.com.”
