Explorer Camp Scholarships Available At BUEI
Scholarships are available for students aged 12-14 to attend a week long Explorer Camp developed around the Young Reporters for the Environment [YRE] programme offered at BUEI.
A spokesperson said, “As the National Operator of the Foundation for Environmental Education programmes [FEE] in Bermuda, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] is pleased to announce that scholarships are available for students aged 12-14 to attend a week long Explorer Camp developed around the Young Reporters for the Environment [YRE] programme offered at BUEI. These scholarships have been made available thanks to the generous support of Hanover Re Ltd.
“YRE is an environment-focused community journalism programme offered to Schools, Youth Groups or Individuals aged 11-25. The YRE programme allows students to use three media tools [writing, photography, and film] to engage their audience in local environmental topics whilst building constructive journalism and investigative skills.
“BUEI’s YRE Explorer Camps offer a variety of themes that will keep campers excited about the ocean and the Earth. Each week offers an immersive project in constructive journalism, combining tech with nature, science, and history. Explorers will spend the week taking part in special field trips, learning from guest mentors, and enjoying hands-on activities.
“Campers will also have the opportunity of exploring the YRE curriculum through writing, photography, and film. Pieces captured by our campers will be submitted to next year’s YRE Annual International Competition, assessed by an international jury and recognised on a global scale. Since the launch of its pilot programme earlier this year, the YRE Programme at BUEI represented Bermuda for the first time in the YRE International Competition. Entries ranged in forms of traditional journalism, photography, and videography with an article by Zoe Mir entitled, ‘Plastic Pollution on Nonsuch Island, the Home of the Cahows’ being shortlisted as a winner.
“Available dates for the YRE Camp Scholarships are as follows:
- July 17 – 21 – Maker Workshops: Archaeology Beneath the Sea
- August 21-25- Earth Reporters Week: Bermuda’s Biodiversity
“Camps run from 9am –3pm; after-camp activities run from 3-5pm.
“Each scholarship covers all camp costs and includes after-camp activities.
