Pre-Cup Match Extravaganza On July 21
The Corporation of St. George’s will be holding a Pre-Cup Match Extravaganza on Friday, July 21 at 6.00pm at King’s Square in St. George’s.
Mayor Quinell Francis announced: “It is both my honour and pleasure, on behalf of the residents and businesses of the Town of St. George, to invite our fellow Bermudians, residents, and visitors to share in our pre-Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day celebration leading to Cup Match 2023.
“While our Cup Match competition is about the game of cricket and provides spirited competition between those under the banner of red and blue that support Somerset Cricket Club and those true believers who under the banner of light and dark blue support St. George’s Cricket Club, it would be remiss of me not to mention two persons whose lives weigh heavily on my heart during this time of year.
“I am encouraged by the unfailing steadfastness of William Wilberforce to marshal legislation through the UK Parliament to end the slave trade that gave birth to our Emancipation Day. The unfailing commitment to freedom is exhibited through the life story of the Bermudian Mary Prince, who, although born into slavery, played a significant role in the abolishment of slavery throughout the British colonies.
“Based on the unfailing steadfastness and unfailing commitment that are a part of our legacy, I am convinced that our future as a people and as an island is bright.
“As Bermuda’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Town of St. George is proud to host a community event that will foster camaraderie between St. George’s Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Club by showcasing some of Bermuda’s best entertainment for everyone’s enjoyment. We will gather at King’s Square, where Ms. Nikita Robinson will serve as the evening’s MC, and DJ Iceman will keep the music flowing. The following artists will be showcased during the event:
- United Dance Productions
- Fire and Laser Dancers
- Cindy Smith – Bermuda’s Song Bird
- Fire Wayne – Soca vocalist
“In support of small businesses and to offer a taste of St. George’s, vendors including Sensational Delights, Ashley’s Lemonade, Hot Dog Delights, Jazzy Treats, Bermuda Cupcake Company, and more will be in attendance to meet your food and beverage needs. In addition, kids’ face painting and fun castles to keep the little ones entertained will be available. Designated parking will be available at Tiger Bay, so my recommendation is for attendees to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
“The pre-Cup Match Extravaganza 2023 is sponsored by UNESCO Grants and organised by the Corporation of St. George’s.
“In conclusion, I would like to thank the Minister, Col. Burch JP, MP, the residents of the Town, the Corporation of St. George’s staff, the business owners, and partners for all their hard work in putting this event together, and acknowledge the support of my Council as we strive to make the Town of St. George a preferred destination to live, work, and be visited.”
