Premier Burt Attends 45th CARICOM Meeting

July 5, 2023

Premier David Burt is in Trinidad and Tobago this week to attend the 45th Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government is an annual event that gathers leaders from the 15 member states and five associate members in the Caribbean region. The conference serves as a platform for the heads of government to discuss and make decisions on matters related to regional cooperation, integration, and development.

“This year’s meeting takes place in the town of Charguaramas in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Charguaramas, which established CARICOM in 1973. The Premier’s attendance also coincides with a significant milestone for Bermuda as we recognise the 20th anniversary of our associate membership, having joined CARICOM in July 2003.

Premier David Burt said, “It is an honour to attend the 45th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting as we commemorate several milestones, such as the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Charguaramas and the 20th-anniversary of Bermuda joining the CARICOM family.

“Bermuda’s participation in CARICOM since 2003 signifies its historical connection to a prominent English-speaking international organisation in the region and helps us to maintain strong cultural, economic, and political ties with countries with similar backgrounds, fostering collaboration and mutual growth.

“We continue to support CARICOM’s commitment to democracy and good regional governance, and we are proud of having played a crucial role in advocating for greater involvement of associate members in regional affairs.

“Our membership has expanded opportunities for Bermuda in various sectors, including sports, arts, science, public health, and business and has also facilitated sectoral collaborations in unions, energy, law, technology, and technical training. In addition, Bermudians have access to exceptional educational opportunities through the esteemed University of the West Indies.

“The annual gathering of the Heads of Government presents a valuable opportunity to re-engage with fellow CARICOM members, exchange ideas, and strengthen the bonds that unite us. And, our participation reaffirms Bermuda’s commitment to regional cooperation, mutual development, and the pursuit of shared goals.”
