Bahamas Independence Anniversary Celebrated
“In celebration of the 50th anniversary of independence for the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, the Bermuda Government supported the Independence Committee of Bahamas by hosting a reception, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs & The Public Service Fred Mitchell,” Premier David Burt said.
Premier David Burt tweeted the photos below, saying: “As we congratulate the Bahamas on their Golden Jubilee, we also recognise the shared culture and history of the two islands. Some may not know that the Bermuda Gombeys and their Bahamian Junkanoo costumes are both rooted in African traditions, symbolising cultural preservation and communal celebrations during times of slavery and oppression.”
