SGCC President: Cup Match Prep Going Well

July 7, 2023

[Updated] Preparations for the 2023 Cup Match are going well, tickets are now on sale, and as it stands now there are no plans for the event to be on TV, however there will be live radio coverage.

This was from St George’s CC President Neil Paynter who spoke with Bernews about the preparations for the iconic annual event.

Mr Paynter confirmed that the tickets will $25 for adults and $15 for seniors and children.

The always anticipated announcement of both teams is expected to be made on the Saturday before the event.

As far as media coverage plans, the St George’s CC President confirmed that local media will be providing live radio commentary and said as of now, there are no plans to have it broadcast on television.

He explained they did include “radio and television broadcasting” when soliciting applications for services [see ad here], however as of this time they have not received any viable submissions for television, and he also confirmed that this year, there would be a fee payable to the club in order to provide the television broadcast.

In 2021, two weeks prior to Cup Match, the club said it may not be broadcast on TV and online [the online live stream rights have generally been tied to the TV rights and providing a full multi-camera broadcast for two days requires a full team and an extensive amount of work], however the event was successfully televised and streamed online, so whether any last minute plans come to fruition again remains to be seen.

As always the two day event is expected to include a good array of amenities, with 18 vendors signed up set to offer a range of food stalls plus activities like face painting, and Mr Paynter noted that it “goes without saying there will be Crown and Anchor.”

Mr Paynter added that many people are working hard with an aim to put on a great event, and they look forward to welcoming everyone to the Wellington Oval.

  1. Shame no TV coverage says:

I enjoyed the TV coverage. I thought that it was good for cricket on the Island as it increased people’s interest who might never have followed local cricket. Shame.

  2. Shakemahead says:

St. George will continue to be terrible until new leadership is appointed

  3. Verdad says:

There are ten Bermudians (retired seniors) living near me (overseas) and each year we wear our respective Cup Match team colours and look forward to watching the game together on television. Not the same listening via radio. To say we are disappointed is an understatement. Money!! The main reason we can’t live there anymore. Sad!
