Bermudian artist Lance Tucker has delved into his ancestry and heritage as part of his second solo exhibition at City Hall in Hamilton.

DNA Discovery is the title of Mr Tucker’s latest collection of work.

He said he was inspired to explore his backstory after his sister and niece ordered an at-home DNA test kit to discover more about their genealogy.

“My sister and niece did DNA tests a few years ago,” Mr Tucker told Bernews. “I was figuring out what I can do for my show, and that came to mind.

“It enabled me to explore my DNA history; I found out I had parts Japanese and Kenyan, among others.”

Mr Tucker chose subjects representing three parts of his heritage – Japanese, Kenyan and Bermuda – including Japanese geisha and koi fish, a map of Kenya and Africa, and Gombey Warriors and Mobylette mopeds.

The exhibition involves 20 pieces brought to life on canvas using Mr Tucker’s signature mixed-media techniques.

“It’s been interesting to discover different things about myself,” he said. “I still have more research to do.”

Mr Tucker added: “I’m grateful for those who inspired me and helped get me to this point in my journey. I must thank my mom, Helene Tucker, sister Sherry Smith, niece Sherrita Aggarwal, Nzingha Ming and Kemda Bean.

The DNA Discovery exhibition opens tomorrow [July 21] from 5 pm to 7 pm and runs for three weeks.
