Video: Flashback To 2013 Gold Medal Win
The gold medal winning performance by the women’s football team in the 2023 Island Games came almost 10 years to the day after their last gold medal win, as the women’s football team also won the gold medal back on July 18, 2013.
In 2013 — when Bermuda hosted the Games — the Bermuda women’s football team claimed the gold medal in dramatic style, with the game going down to the wire with a penalty shootout that saw Bermuda’s goalkeeper Stacy Babb make two big saves.
Neither team scored in regulation time, so the match went into overtime, which also ended with a score of 0-0, sending the match into penalties. Bermuda missed the first penalty, and players from both sides kept converting, until Bermuda’s goalkeeper Stacy Babb made a key save, diving to her right to deny Greenland, and equal up the score.
With the two teams remaining tied with 4 penalties each, the game went into sudden death, which saw Babb make another big save, diving to her right again to block the shot and giving Bermuda the win. Within seconds the team, and many fans, rushed the field and hugged Babb as the celebrations began as Bermuda claimed one of their two gold medal wins in football.

The 2023 gold medal win by the women’s football team was equally impressive with the women’s team going undefeated throughout the entire tournament scoring a total of 15 goals while conceding zero.
Coach Naquita Robinson led the Bermuda women’s team to gold at the Island Games on home soil in 2013 and 2023, and Akeyla Furbert has the distinction of having been part of both gold medal winning teams in 2013 and 2023, with Furbert scoring one of Bermuda’s four goals in the finals earlier this month in Guernsey.
