The Governing Body of the Berkeley Institute announced that Ms. Kali Douglas has been appointed as the next Deputy Principal of The Berkeley Institute.

A spokesperson said, “Ms. Douglas will officially assume her post on September 1, 2023 and will therefore be a member of the leadership team for the commencement of the 2023/2024 academic school year. This will ensure continuity of leadership as our students return to campus on September 11th.

“The need for a new Deputy Principal was made necessary after it was announced that Mrs. Nadia Robinson was to be appointed as Deputy Head of School at Saltus Grammar School for the upcoming school year.

“Ms. Douglas was the successful candidate chosen from an extremely talented and competent pool of local and international applicants, following an intense, robust and competitive recruitment process conducted by the Board-appointed search committee [the “Committee”] led by Board member Ms. Garita Coddington.

“The process included the candidates’ production of a portfolio of artifacts; a strengths assessment, emotional intelligence survey, and psychometric behavior assessment; an interview by a panel; a two-hour multiple-scenario session; and a one-on-one interaction with the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Craig Bridgewater. The Committee worked diligently to ensure that the most qualified, experienced and suitable candidate for the position of Deputy Principal of The Berkeley Institute was nominated for the role. The Board of Governors takes this opportunity to thank everyone, including the candidates, for their participation in the process.

“Ms. Douglas, who has over 21 years in progressive educational experience, in addition to being an alumnus of The Berkeley Institute, holds a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership, a Masters of Science degree in Natural Resource and Environmental Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Teacher Education.

“She is no stranger to the School having previously been a member of the faculty as a teacher of Science, S1 Year Head, Instructional Team Leader of Science, Assessment Lead for Science, instructor in the Berkeley Accelerated Summer Institute [BASI], and choreographer of many graduation cotillions before transitioning to leadership positions with the Department of Education including Content Specialist for Science and, subsequently, Acting Staff Development Officer. Ms. Douglas now returns to The Berkeley Institute having gained further leadership experience, most recently as Deputy Principal and Acting Principal of Dellwood Middle School.”

Ms. Douglas commented “I am overwhelmed with gratitude and profound appreciation to serve as a leader at my cherished alma mater. Returning to the institution that has played an instrumental role in shaping my academic, professional and personal journeys holds a special place in my heart. It is my promise that I will give my all to contribute meaningfully to uphold the School’s rich legacy and enhance our shared vision of educational excellence.

“I am also excited to play a major role during this pivotal time in public education as The Berkeley Institute valiantly navigates school transformation, specifically the Signature Learning Programmes. It is my belief that if we embrace innovative teaching methodologies, personalized learning approaches and incorporate modern technologies, we can create dynamic and engaging educational environments. Moreover, this transformation encourages active participation, critical thinking, and adaptability, enabling our students to develop essential skills for the rapidly changing world.

“I am looking forward to building positive relationships and working alongside the faculty, students, parents, and alumni. Together we will continue to cultivate a place of learning that nurtures not only academic excellence but also values such as compassion, resilience, and collaboration. Let us work hand in hand to shape the future of our school, inspiring generations of students to come.”

The spokesperson said, “Ms. Douglas has one daughter who will soon be turning 30 and plays an instrumental role in her church family at Vernon Temple where she is the lead liturgical dancer.”
