Ministry Updates On Hurricane Franklin
“As we are within 24 hours of Hurricane Franklin’s closest approach to our shores, we are reminding residents to remain aware and continue to monitor the storm forecasts from the Bermuda Weather Service,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks in providing an update on the approach of Hurricane Franklin.
A Government spokesperson said, “Hurricane Franklin remains a potential threat to Bermuda at this time, and Minister Weeks emphasised the importance of staying alert and prepared.
He added, “While the current projections indicate that the impact will likely be limited, we must always prioritise the safety and well-being of our community. We are also reminding residents that the Bermuda Weather Service is the official weather authority for the island. And it’s advisable to carefully scruitinise other information sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.”
The spokesperson said, “The public is also reminded that public services are expected to operate as normal tomorrow, and Government offices remain open. However, the public should stay tuned to official government advisories in the event there are any weather-related service disruptions.
“As Hurricane Franklin passes through the region, current forecasts show that tropical storm force winds are expected to affect the northwestern and northern marine areas between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. tomorrow [Aug. 30].
“However, the storm is not expected to bring significant rainfall. Seas inside the reef are anticipated to reach between 5 and 6 feet, with limited surge due to the storms’ passage corresponding with the changing tide from high to low.
“Safety during the passage of the storm is key. As such, high surf warning signs have been posted at South Shore marine parks and will be placed in select areas along the North Shore marine parks.
“The red flag is flying at the tower at Horseshoe Bay, indicating the highest hazard warning for potential swimmers.
“Lifeguard services at Horseshoe Bay will be suspended by the end of the day due to rapidly deteriorating conditions.
“According to the 3.00 p.m. update from the BWS, Hurricane Franklin’s closest point of approach is expected to be 150 nautical miles northwest of Bermuda at 2.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 30 August.
“Franklin’s current position is approximately 287 nautical miles west-southwest of Bermuda, moving North-northeast at 10 knots. The storm has maximum winds of 115 knots, gusting to 135 knots.
