Opposition Leader’s Cup Match Message
[Opposition Leader Cole Simons' Cup Match message]
Happy Cup Match Bermuda!
It is Cup Match time in Bermuda, and whether we are at the game, on the beach or relaxing at home, one thing is certain–we will enjoy ourselves!
It is a time to celebrate, it’s a time for togetherness. It is a time for our people, our history, our traditions and our country.
One cannot enjoy Cup Match without engaging in some sort of banter. If you have not screamed, “Red and blue” or “Blue and blue” at least three times this week.
On this annual Cup Match holiday, we cannot forget one of Bermuda’s national heroes, Mary Prince, an enslaved woman who was born in Bermuda and dared to present a petition to the British Parliament to argue for her human right to freedom.
It’s all about emancipation – the freedom to come together on one field, under one umbrella for fun, friendship and competition; the beautiful legacy of a few strong people who fought for all of us.
I urge families to continue to teach their children and grandchildren about Bermuda’s history of enslavement and of the events that finally lead to our emancipation. As a people, we celebrate the fierce courage that Mary Prince demonstrated, and vow to never take our freedom for granted.
Over the two-day holiday, we look forward to the friendly spirit of competition and rivalry as we proudly proclaim who will win Cup Match, and where the trophy will reside.
During this Cup Match holiday, let’s take a moment to reflect on where we are as a country and as individuals. This is a time when no matter where we are from and what team we support, we come together for the most celebrated holiday of the year.
I believe the key to our future lies within each of us. We must do our best to believe in ourselves, grasp our opportunities, pursue our goals and turn our dreams into reality.
On behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, I wish everyone a wonderful holiday. Please be safe and do not drink and drive. Enjoy your time with your loved ones and always remember this is a freedom that shall not ever take for granted.
And to Somerset and St George’s may the best team win!
Happy Cup Match Bermuda!
