MP Simmons-Wade On Hurricane Franklin
“Bermuda will be spared the full wrath of Franklin, our first hurricane for the season, but remains as a potential threat with tropical storm winds,” MP Ianthia Simmons-Wade said, adding, “We encourage everyone to check in on our most vulnerable; our seniors, our disabled and families who are struggling financially.”
PLP MP Ianthia Simmons-Wade said, “Hurricane Franklin, a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to weaken to a Category 2 before reaching the closest point to the island at 5pm on Wednesday. A Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect.
“Bermuda will be spared the full wrath of Franklin, our first hurricane for the season, but remains as a potential threat with tropical storm winds.
“As daunting as it may be, this is the norm for us, having lived through many hurricanes in our lifetime. Potentially there can be high winds, heavy rains, the possible loss of power and damage to our homes and properties.
“Each year from June to November, the island stands by as we listen out for weather updates. When the news comes we all know the “routine”.
“In preparation, we pull out our hurricane kits or hit the stores to purchase; ropes, tarpaulin, buckets, flashlights, batteries, plywood, nails, first aid kits, etc. We fill up our tubs, board our windows & doors, gas up our cars and secure outside furniture and plants.
“A must is the purchase of non-perishable food and bottled water. Don’t forget to check your house insurance and medications. Being prepared is key, as we are still in hurricane season.
“This is the time that we as a people will come together to support and assist our neighbors, families and friends.
“We encourage everyone to check in on our most vulnerable; our seniors, our disabled and families who are struggling financially.
“We are all praying that our island will be spared of any significant damage. For those persons who will be working during and after the hurricane to protect and provide services, thank you in advance.
