Kaelin Cox captured three gold medals for the Bermuda Sanshou Association at the Fourth Pan American Kungfu Championships in Markham, Ontario.
Cox claimed four medals in traditional kungfu, winning the men’s over-18 southern openhand, imitation form and long weapons. He also won bronze in broadswords.
The team of 16 athletes participated in the championships and will return home with an impressive 20-medal haul from the three-day event, which finished yesterday [August 6].
Winning gold in sanda were Krista Dyer, the team captain, and Quennel Robinson; Muryah Swan, Kallan Todd, Geraldine Sidders, Tristan Robinson and Harrison Selkirk claimed silver; and Che Durham, Enzi Johnson, and Jonathan Trott secured bronze.
In contemporary wushu taolu, Errin Cann won silver in the female group C changquan and bronze in the straight sword; Talia Iris claimed silver in the women’s over-40 straight sword and open hand in traditional kungfu.
Meanwhile, Garon Wilkinson, the BSA president, won bronze in the men’s over-40 swords and long weapons.
“I was really impressed with Kaelin’s gold medal wins, particularly in the open-hand division, which is usually the most popular contested and competitive,” Wilkinson told Bernews.
Wilkinson said he was thrilled so many local athletes picked up medals in the sanda [Chinese kickboxing] competition.
“Krista won gold in the elite female division,” he said. “Her wins were against legit opponents and were very controlled and composed.
“Quennel was our other gold medallist and he showed some great technique.
“Kallan Todd, one of our star athletes, who is only 17, was up against elite-level men. Although he didn’t win gold, he had an excellent tournament.”
Congratulations, everyone! Well done!! Similar to Clarence Hill’s fine accomplishments!!Clarence did so well that U.B.P. didn’t even recognize him!!Bermuda, REMEMBER that type of treatment for your fellow Bermudians!!ESPECIALLY when it is time to vote!!!
