Cricket: Canada Qualify After Defeating Bermuda

Bermuda have suffered heartbreak in their bid to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after losing to Canada by 39 runs in a pivotal match at the North Field, National Sports Centre, today [October 7].

Although Bermuda led Canada, the tournament favourites, by two points heading into the clash after winning multiple matches, they needed to win the T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier decider due to their opponent’s superior net run rate.

Canada, who won the toss, scored 132 for four in a game reduced to 18 overs per side because of bad weather, with Navneet Dhaliwal anchoring the innings with 45 runs.

Dominic Sabir was the pick of the Bermuda bowlers, claiming two for 34 off four overs.

In reply, Bermuda were dismissed for 93 runs off 16.5 overs, with Terryn Fray top-scoring with 30 from 35 balls. Opener Kamau Leverock hit 23 from 23 balls, and Allan Douglas Jr scored 22 from 13.

Kaleem Sana and Jeremy Gordon took three wickets each for Canada, who have reached the T20 World Cup for the first time.

The T20 World Cup will be held in the Caribbean and the United States from June 4 to 30..

Didn’t run for twos like canada did. Lack of energy. party, party all week long, well sure showed in the final day and the final result. We need to take a good long look at lifestyle of players and the pressure placed on the coach to select those with f&f connections! Seemed like the coach came with rules and requirements of players, and then caved to the same ole same ole. Well, same ole same ole, gets you the same ole result!!

While you’re absolutely right about running between the wickets and hustling in the field and the lack of urgency in key moments, I’m not sure what youre getting at with the ‘party party’ bit. Are we dropping back into typical stereotypes when the team for the most part had an excellent tournament?

We gave it our pest lads. Now it is time to prepare younger players. Build up from the bottom and new standard and unit for the next tournament.

Thank you all for your perseverance.

Very disappointed…After we defeated Canada by a huge margin in the first game, Canadian Captain Saad Zafar remained totally confident, he said at that time and I quote, “We can definitely beat Bermuda on the last day. We have a strong team and we just had one off day. I believe we have a very good chance of beating them, there is no doubt. It’s just about sticking to our strengths and playing our best game on the day. “If we play to our potential and play the best on the day, we should be able to beat any team in this tournament.”
To come in our backyard and make such a statement was cheeky andI thought our boys would have used that to motivate them to rise to the occasion in the last game, but it was not to be….the way we capitulated to the Canadian bowling was shocking…frankly I think that we should focus on youth cricket…I would like to see the Board, who by the way I think did an excellent job in preparing the team congrats to Arnold, Cal and the rest of the team….maybe we should look at inviting Gus Logie to work with our youth and begin the rebuilding process….
