‘Angle Of Sunlight Interacting With A Vessel’
A report of a possible vessel on fire was later identified as a reflection caused by the “angle of sunlight interacting with a vessel.”
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Monday 23rd October, 7:15pm – Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, received a 911 call from a concerned member of public reporting a suspected vessel on fire off the North of Dockyard.
“Bermuda Radio made a Marine VHF Pan Pan Urgency Broadcast for any vessels in need of assistance or with information on sighting any vessels possibly requiring assistance, the RBR Coast Guard on Patrol in the area, subsequently advised due to the angle of sunlight interacting with a vessel, giving a reflection that could appear like a vessel on fire. No further action was required.”
