The STEP Bermuda Conference 2023 is set to take place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute from November 29 to 30.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute is the venue for the upcoming STEP Bermuda Conference 2023, taking place on 29 – 30 November. STEP is a global professional body, with more than 21,000 members comprising lawyers, accountants, trustees, and other practitioners that help families plan for their futures.
“STEP’s mission is to inspire confidence in families planning their assets across generations by setting and upholding high professional standards, informing public policy, promoting education, and connecting practitioners globally to share knowledge and best practice. The Bermuda Branch has some 180 members who serve Bermuda’s vibrant trust and private client industry.”
The Conference has been designed by the STEP Bermuda Branch. Alex Whittaker, Chair of STEP Bermuda and client director at Hamilton Trust Company Limited, said, “The executive committee is proud to serve our members and ultimately help drive forward Bermuda’s trust and private client sectors. The annual conference is the highlight of our events calendar, and a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on Bermuda’s thriving trust industry to both a local and international audience. We are excited to have over 30 speakers participating and are humbled to have attendees flying in from all over the world to join us.”
The spokesperson said, “Joining the program are a number of high-profile speakers including Her Excellency Rena Lalgie, the Bermuda Governor, and the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP, MP, Bermuda’s Minister of Economy & Labour. James Quarmby, partner and head of the private wealth team at London law firm Stephenson Harwood and who regularly appears in the press and broadcast media, will consider what a UK labor government might mean for UK non-doms, the world of ‘offshore,’ and the UK’s Overseas Territories.”
The conference agenda focuses on a number of areas which Bermuda is actively looking to develop from a legislative standpoint. Henry Tucker, Managing Partner at Harneys’ Bermuda office said, “Harneys is delighted to be the headline sponsor of the STEP Bermuda Conference as part of its initiative to promote access to Bermuda’s private wealth industry across the firm’s network of offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. Bermuda has a demonstrated track record of preserving wealth over generations that makes it a very strong fit with the current top priorities of UHNWIs, family offices, and their advisors, who are operating in a rapidly shifting geopolitical and economic climate. Harneys is pleased to help meet this demand by offering access to excellent and responsive Bermuda legal advice across its network and contribute to the growth and stability of Bermuda’s trusts and estates industry for many more generations to come.”
The spokesperson said, “Conference topics include how a UK labor government will impact the ‘offshore’ world and UK’s Overseas Territories; best practices and common design flaws of family offices; planning for the modern family; PR considerations for private clients; Africa opportunities and challenges in the 2020s; offshore trusts and European families; trustees’ responsibilities for potentially insolvent trusts; digital assets in the context of modern estate planning; trust case update; offshore developments in relation to mental incapacity, and more.”
Minister of Economy & Labour Jason Hayward, who will also participate in the STEP Bermuda event said, “Bermuda has long been an attractive destination for the High Net Worth Services industry. We were one of the first international trust jurisdictions and remain a premier jurisdiction for trusts, family offices, high net worth individuals and other private-client structures. Bermuda’s regulatory regime ensures privacy while meeting the highest standards of global compliance. The broadening of Bermuda’s wealth management industry has been identified as an area for growth, and the island is in the process of expanding its offering with new legislation.”
