The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Bermuda recently celebrated National Philanthropy Day by partnering with the Bermuda National Trust to plant a tree in the Royal Naval Dockyard Cemetery in honour of Bermuda is Love.

The cedar tree is part of a larger plot for annual planting by AFP Bermuda to recognise important philanthropy in Bermuda.

Myles Darrell of the Bermuda National Trust said, “Planting a tree is a great way to commemorate achievements, memorialize moments and celebrate life. The National Trust is always happy to collaborate and provide opportunities through living heritage to support our community.”

National Philanthropy Day celebrates the charitable work that everyone does to make a difference and impact their communities through donations of time, talent and financial contributions.

AFP Bermuda Co-Presidents Ann Spencer-Arscott and Katie Bennett said, “This year, the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Bermuda is excited to recognize Bermuda is Love: a group of young Bermudians doing amazing work including food and clothing drives, trash clean-ups and initiatives to combat homelessness. Their work to encourage collaboration, education, activism, advocacy, and love for our community and the environment is incredibly inspiring”.

Aaron Crichlow of Bermuda is Love said, “Bermuda Is Love’s vision is to create a Bermuda where everyone’s basic human needs are met and guaranteed by law. We organize campaigns and events advocating for the human right to housing, clothing, food, education, healthcare, a healthy environment, and access to justice. We are thrilled to accept the National Philanthropy Day award from AFP Bermuda.

“Thank you to everyone who has participated in our events or read any of our articles or infographics. Thank you to AFP Bermuda and everyone who has shown us support. It truly means the world to us. It tells us that we are making a difference and that we are having an effect on our community. And it encourages us to keep going. To continue advocating. To continue trying to make a difference and we couldn’t be more grateful to everyone.”

The spokesperson said, “The AFP Bermuda chapter is committed to investing in and supporting the mentoring, training and development of professionals involved in raising funds ethically in Bermuda. For information about AFP, visit afpglobal.org/.“

A laudable goal, and thank you for planting the tree.

Sadly, Bermuda loves many people, but not all people. Our Human Rights Act was amended specifically to permit discrimination against homosexuals.
