The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] issued a safety advisory in advance of the Christmas holiday.

James Howard, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, said, “The holiday season is upon us, and while it is a time of joy and celebration, it is important to stay vigilant and protect ourselves from potential criminal activity. Your Bermuda Police Service [BPS] wishes to remind you to take necessary precautions while shopping in person or online, as well as securing your vehicles and homes during the festive period.

“Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind:

Shopping Safety:

  • When shopping in person, always be aware of your surroundings and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Keep your personal belongings close to you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Be cautious of strangers offering unsolicited help or deals that seem too good to be true.
  • You may wish to consider shopping during daylight hours and if possible, shop with a friend or family member.

Online Shopping:

  • Shop only on secure websites with “https” in the URL and look for a padlock icon in the address bar.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for each online account and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.
  • Remember; be cautious of suspicious emails, links, or attachments, as they may be phishing attempts.
  • Also, regularly monitor your bank statements and credit card activity for any unauthorized charges.

Vehicle Security:

  • Always lock your vehicle, even if stepping away for only a moment.
  • If going out shopping after dark, be sure to park in well-lit areas and avoid leaving purchases and other valuables in view of passers-by.
  • Keep valuables out of sight or locked in the trunk to deter potential thieves.

Home Security:

  • Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even if you are just stepping out briefly. If possible, use timers for lights and electronics to give the impression that someone is home.
  • You may consider installing a home security system, particularly if they are discounted as part of seasonal sales. Such systems will serve you well year round.
  • Notifying trusted neighbours when you are going to be away is also advised.
  • Be sure to avoid displaying holiday gifts in plain sight from outside your home and use opaque or black trash bag when putting packaging out for collection.
  • Doing so prevents individuals from being aware of purchases you have made, particularly if these relate to high-end electronics, which could prove attractive to thieves.

“Your safety and security are our top priority. If you witness any suspicious activity or become a victim of a crime, contact the Bermuda Police Service immediately. Let us work together to make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for everyone.

“Merry Christmas and stay safe!”
