GCS Magazine Interviews Jayson Jackson
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Jayson Jackson, the head golf course superintendent for the Bermuda Government Golf Courses, was featured in last month’s edition of GCM, the official publication of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America [GCSAA].
The Bermudian was interviewed before the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship at the Port Royal Golf Course last month.
Jackson is a three-time GCSAA International Superintendent Member and studied turfgrass at Guelph University in Ontario, Canada.
He has worked in Hong Kong, the Card Sound Golf Club in Key Largo, Florida, and the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.
Jackson told the magazine, “We finally are recovering from our most recent visitor, Hurricane Lee. Our green complexes held out well due to our calcium applications applied pre- and post-Lee.
“As a son of the soil in Bermuda, hurricanes are part of Bermudian identity. However, as a golf course superintendent and hosting international events in hurricane season, our team must factor in all possible factors, as post-hurricane readiness is imperative in a timely fashion.”
Jackson, appointed to his position in 2021, added: “Hosting a PGA Tour event in Bermuda as a Bermudian is quite an honour and a sense of national pride, as this will be my third Tour event as a golf course superintendent.
“I must thank all my mentors in the turfgrass industry, the University of Guelph turfgrass management programme and the Government Golf Course Board of Trustees, chairman Mr Kim Swan and the Port Royal agronomy team.”
Camilo Villegas, of Colombia, won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to end his nine-year wait for a PGA Tour title. He finished two shots ahead of Sweden’s Alex Noren.
