PrivCom & HRC Mark Human Rights Day
In commemoration of Human Rights Day, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda [PrivCom] and the Human Rights Commission [HRC] marked “key milestones for privacy as a fundamental human right.”
A spokesperson said, “This year, on the occasion of Human Rights Day, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda and the Human Rights Commission have produced a joint blog post.
“The year 2023 is a year of key milestones for privacy as a fundamental human right. On 10 December 2023, we are celebrating 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [UDHR] and on 3 September 2023, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights [ECoHR] entering into force.
“Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10th December. It commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations [UN] General Assembly adopted in Paris the Universal Declaration of Human Rights [UDHR], which set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
“The Declaration is a landmark document that enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, ethnicity, colour, sex, gender and sexual identity, age, disability, religion, political or other opinion, language, national or social origin, property, birth, or other identity category.
“The ECoHR is the first convention of the Council of Europe [CoE], which was adopted in 1950 and became effective in 1953.”
