Famous Earns Award, Wins & Breaks Records
Sakari Famous had an outstanding week, earning the Southland Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week award, winning an event, setting a new school record, and breaking a complex record that has stood since 1990.
The Bermudian athlete competes for McNeese State University, and their website said, “Sakari Famous earned Southland Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week. Famous leaped 1.76m [5-9.25] in the high jump to claim the gold medal at the Samford Invitational this past weekend. It was her second-best mark of the season, following her 1.80m leap at the LSU Purple Tiger, an inch-and-a-half higher. Her best mark ranks her 22nd in the NCAA while this prior mark is tied for 43rd in the nation.”
The University also said, “Sakari Famous broke her own school women’s high jump record and 34-year-old Ralph O. Ward Rec. Complex mark at the McNeese Indoor II Track & Field meet here Friday.
“Famous, who broke the school record while winning a gold medal at the 2022 Southland Conference Indoor Championships, matched that mark of 5-10.75 at this year’s season opener at the LSU Purple Tiger two weeks ago. Her clearing of 5-11.25 on Friday ranks tied as the 5th-best mark in Southland Conference history and 21st best in the nation this season.”
The University also noted that she broke the Ralph O. Ward Rec Complex Record, stating, “Sakari Famous, Women’s High Jump, 5-11.25. Breaks old record of 5-8.75 set by Lamar in 1990.”
