A new female champion will likely be crowned in the Butterfield & Vallis 5K Run on Sunday [January 21].
Gayle Lindsay, who won last year in 18min 48sec, told Bernews, “I’m unlikely to race because my calves are still giving me a bit of bother” after her exploits in the recent Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge.
Lindsay came second in the Butterfield Mile adult women [5:28.55], third in the BF&M 10K [39:53], and won the PwC Bermuda Half Marathon [1:27:07].
Her overall time of 2:12:29 secured her the overall Chubb Half Bermuda Triangle Challenge women’s title.
The 5k event, which raises funds for Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia, starts at 8.30 am with a 1k race for lower primary school students.
The primary and middle school boys and girls start at 9 am, with the youngsters running the 2.7k course, and at 9.30 am, the senior school students and adults running the 5k. Walkers will start five minutes after the runners.
The first 900 finishers will receive a medal, and $500 will be awarded to the primary, middle, and secondary schools/junior groups with the most entries.
Draw prizes will include two Trek Hybrid pedal bikes from Winners’ Edge, breakfast for two at Grotto Bay, and a month of group classes at Alchemy Fitness.
BF&M has donated activity trackers to all winners; there will also be a corporate prize for the company with the most entries.
The first 900 participants at number pick-up tomorrow from 10 am to 1 pm will receive a dri-fit shirt and goodie bag filled with products from Axe, Carolina Rice, Coca-Cola, Folgers, Jif, KraftHeinz, Del Monte, Reign Storm, Pepperidge Farm, Planters Nuts, Powerade, Nature Valley, and Beep.
On race day, volunteers from Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia will assist with the race, marshalling the course and manning the water stops.
The Bermuda Red Cross will be on the course, ensuring the safety of participants.
