“More Than Just Sports: Central Social Clubs”
The Department of Culture will host a Heartbeats Lecture Series event, “More Than ‘Just’ Sports: Central Social Clubs,” on Thursday [Feb 15].
A Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Culture invites you to the February Bermudian Heartbeats Lecture Series event, “More Than ‘Just’ Sports: Central Social Clubs,” on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 6:00 PM, at Vasco da Gama.
“Join us for an insightful exploration of Bermuda’s Central Social Clubs and share your stories and memories of these clubs. Featuring speakers from the Devonshire Recreation Club, The Leopards Club, The Young Men’s Social Club, The Queen’s Club, The Ex Artillery Men’s Association, Vasco da Gama, and others, discover their historical significance and evolving roles in our community.
“This is the second part in a three-part series highlighting the importance of social clubs to Bermuda. Last year the Department hosted a panel discussion on the Western social clubs which can be viewed on the Department’s YouTube channel.
“The discussion will be guided by facilitator Rajai Denbrook and informed by Frank Manning’s seminal 1973 book “Black Clubs in Bermuda: Ethnography of a Play World’.

“We encourage interested members of the public to join us for an evening exploring the past, present, and future of Bermuda’s central social clubs,” said the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Senator Owen Darrell.
“Bermuda’s social clubs are best known for their sports teams, but their significance and impact in Black Bermudian history stretch far beyond the boundaries of any oval or field. So, please come along and share your own memories and stories about these clubs.”

Rolf Commissiong’s report on clubs gathering dust of the shelves. Shame on the Govt for failing yo use it as a guide. Enjoy the history but remember your numbers are falling and his report had constructive ideas.
