BSOA To Hold Poetry Workshop On Feb 17th
The Bermuda Society of Arts [BSoA] is offering a poetry workshop for anyone interested in poetry and writing poetry on Saturday, February 17th from 1pm to 3pm in the gallery, which is located on the top floor of City Hall.
A spokesperson said, “This poetry workshop allows participants to engage with the artwork within the current exhibition at the time and write based on the pieces that are on display. Various approaches will be explored regarding writing based on visual art as ekphrastic writing will be at the core of each workshop. These workshops are led by Matthew Johnston. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Participants only need to bring pen and paper.
“Matthew Johnston is a Bermudian poet, performer, and educator. He has honed his craft over the years through his experiences with the Chewstick Foundation, his time in university studying English and Education, and his ever-supportive creative community. He was a part of Bermuda’s first-ever youth slam poetry team that traveled to participate at Brave New Voices in 2012. He was the recipient of the 2020 Albert J. Caplan Poetry Award during his studies at Temple University, which resulted in his poem “Atlantic Songs” being published on Poets.Org.
“While at Temple, he also served as President and Artistic Director of the Babel Poetry Collective. He recently served as an Adjunct Instructor in the English department at Temple University, where he taught a creative writing poetry course. He has been fortunate enough to be able to share his original work on various platforms between Bermuda and the United States. He is a mentor, and respected writer, who strives to keep growing, having a positive impact, and creating beautiful things.
“Sessions cost $30 for non-members and $20 for gallery members. You can sign up for a session here: https://bsoa.bm/poetry-art/. For information about becoming a member, visit bsoa.bm/join/become-a-member.”
