Remember When: Leverock’s World Cup Catch
[Written by Stephen Wright]
It has been 17 years since Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock took “the catch that shook the world” in Bermuda’s unforgettable game against India at the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Bermuda, one of six qualifiers at the World Cup, took on star-studded India in a group match at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad, on March 19, 2007.
The match was six deliveries old when India opener Robin Uthappa edged a ball from 17-year-old seam bowler Malachi Jones, who was bowling his first World Cup delivery.
Leverock defied logic by flying through the air to take a one-handed diving catch before taking off in a celebratory sprint.
The moment of brilliance was summed up by English television commentator David “Bumble” Lloyd, who famously quipped: “The big man, the fridge has opened! He’s flown like a gazelle!”
India, whose team included Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid, scored 413 for six, securing a 257-run win; however, the match will be forever remembered for Leverock’s catch at slip.
