Special Olympics Calls For ‘Wall Of Fame’

Plans are in the works to erect a “Wall of Fame” at the National Sports Centre [NSC] for those athletes who have represented Bermuda at the Special Olympics World Games.
The Special Olympics Bermuda is preparing a proposal for a monument similar to the grey stone tablets located outside the Aquatics Centre at the NSC, which have stood since 2016 and honour the island’s Olympians from Berlin 1936 to Tokyo 2020.
Sacha Richardson, the organisation’s newly appointed board chair, believes a “Wall of Fame” would be a powerful symbol in recognising the achievements of the island’s Special Olympians.
“We are formulating what the monument would look like down to the materials, and we will then submit our proposal to the National Sports Centre Trustees,” Ms Richardson told Bernews.
“The island’s Olympians are recognised, so there’s no reason why our Special Olympians, who make it to the World Games, should not be acknowledged.”
Richardson, who previously served as the Special Olympics Bermuda secretary, said the proposed monument would require significant financial backing.
“We plan to start seeking funding once we have a better idea of how much this will cost,” she added.
Bermuda’s Special Olympians have competed at two Special Olympic World Games, winning 11 medals in Berlin last summer and eight at the previous Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in 2019.
