To culminate celebrations for Social Work Month, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development, and Seniors, and the Department of Child and Family Services [DCFS] hosted a 2-day workshop for social workers on March 27th and 28th, facilitated by Dr. Vaughn Gay.”

“Social work plays a vital role in our community, serving as a fundamental support system for individuals and families navigating various challenges. Through compassionate guidance, counselling, and practical assistance, social workers drive positive change, champion social justice, and contribute to stronger, more cohesive communities,” said the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors Tinèe Furbert.

In alignment with this year’s theme, “Empowering Social Workers,” the Director of Child and Family Services, Mr. Alfred Maybury shared, “As practicing Social Workers, we must remain empowered to be forever learners; education and exposure do not stop. We do not do this hard work in isolation; we are stronger and more effective as teams who take action together.”

Dr. Vaughn Gay, a licensed professional counsellor and expert in mental health care, said, “Prioritizing mental health isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. It’s the cornerstone of resilience, the fuel for growth, and the pathway to true self-empowerment. When you invest in your mental health, you’re investing in a life of clarity, strength, and purpose.”

Minister Furbert added, “The workshops were focused on social workers with innovative strategies and tools to address the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals and families. It was heartwarming to see DCFS social workers, external stakeholders, and community partners benefit from this experience.”

“The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors extends its gratitude to all social workers and community partners for their dedication and to serving Bermuda’s most vulnerable populations. Thank you again to Dr. Vaughn Gay for his willingness to impart his expertise on effective mental health strategies.”
