Bermuda Is Love ‘FreedomFromWant’ Campaign
This May, Bermuda Is Love has launched the #FreedomFromWant Campaign to “advocate for basic needs as human rights.”
A spokesperson said, “For the past seven months, we have been campaigning for the human rights to housing, a healthy environment, food, clothing, healthcare, education, and access to justice. Together, these human rights embody those ‘basic material needs’ which everyone needs in order to not just survive, but also to live with dignity and to reach their full potential.
“Without these essential rights secured, people face the threats of homelessness, climate change, food insecurity, danger, disease, discrimination, inequality, and poverty, and are unable to fully participate in society.
“Having enough food to eat, or clothes on your back, or a place to call home should no longer be considered a privilege but should form part of the very essence of what it means to be Bermudian, to be human.
“Every human being equally possesses inherent worth and dignity. Denial of these essential rights therefore strips individuals of their inherent worth, relegates them to a state of vulnerability and indignity, and ushers them towards a state of ceaseless want.
“Bermuda Is Love believes that every Bermudian has the right to live a life free of want, free of vulnerability, free of insecurity. Upholding these essential human rights to basic material needs therefore means prioritizing and valuing the dignity and wellbeing of all members of our society, ensuring that everyone has their basic material needs met, and thus the opportunity to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.
“Throughout the month of May, join us as we work to ensure that all Bermudians are able to envision a society where they do not have to worry about where they are going to sleep at night, no longer have to worry about going to school hungry, have access to such appropriate clothing, quality education, and healthcare services for their physical and mental wellbeing, are made aware of their legal rights, and are able to live in a safe, sustainable, and healthy environment.
“Please join us this month for a variety of community events including a Free Clothing Giveaway, Student CV Workshop, Community Health Clinic, School Breakfast Day, Interview on the Daily Hour, Free Legal Advice Clinic, Landlord Rights Workshop, and Free Gardening Class.
“No Bermudian deserves to live a life of want. Let us work together as a community to ensure that everyone has their basic material needs met and guaranteed by law.
