The Bermuda Archives is inviting the public to their upcoming 2nd Annual Open House on June 7, 2024, for International Archives Day, themed “Digitize It.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Archives formally invites the public to visit us, get a rare glimpse of our repository and collection, and learn more about the Bermuda Archives at our 2nd Annual Open House for International Archives Day, with the theme this year: “Digitize It”.

“While June 9th is recognized as International Archives Day for the Department of Libraries and Archives, this year, the day will be observed a few days earlier on Friday, June 7th, 2024.

“The Bermuda Archives had a very successful open house event last year, with a large number of people taking advantage of our tours, interacting with our Archivists, and learning more about Bermuda’s history.

“International Archives Day is a day to reflect on the significant role archives play in maintaining, storing, conserving, and preserving the cultural heritage of nations around the world. While the department houses the Government’s historical records, we also preserve Bermuda’s cultural heritage by maintaining collections from various organizations and community members.

“This year, the theme is “Digitize It” as we explore the future of the business of archival science. The Bermuda Archives aims to present some of the projects that are anticipated to be implemented in the next few years.”

Multimedia Officer Keith Caesar noted, “Our lives and stories are the very things that connect us to one another. It’s important that we shed light on the information we possess. By digitizing our collective history, we can preserve and access it more efficiently, securing the stories of Bermuda’s journey for generations to come.”

He added, “We would be delighted if you could come and see the work we are doing.”

Head of the Department of Libraries and Archives Joanne Brangman added, “Digitization is crucial for preserving historical archives, enhancing accessibility, and ensuring long-term preservation. The theme “Digitize It” for International Archives Day highlights the Bermuda Archives’ commitment to using technology to safeguard Bermuda’s rich history and promote wider engagement with valuable resources. We hope you will join us at the Bermuda Archives Open House to explore the importance of digitizing our heritage.”

The Government spokesperson said, “Please mark your calendars for International Archives Day 2024: Digitize It! This exciting event is designed to promote the digitization efforts of the Bermuda Archives and will take place from 9:30am to 4pm. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact the Archives at 297-7737 or via email at archives@gov.bm. We look forward to seeing you there!”
