BRSC Promotes Road Safety With New Theme
The Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] has introduced the June theme, “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow,” urging drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users to prioritize vigilance and attentiveness to ensure road safety and prevent accidents.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Road Safety Council [BRSC] presents our theme for June: “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow.” This theme highlights the critical importance of vigilance and attentiveness in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone on our roads.
“‘Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow’ is more than just a slogan; it is a call to action for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users. By staying alert and focused on the road today, we can prevent accidents, save lives, and ensure a safer tomorrow for our communities.
“According to the TCD Traffic Code Handbook – To All Users of the Road, section 4 states: “Before using the road, be sure that your alertness or sense of caution is not affected by alcohol or fatigue.” This law is provided to ensure the safety of every road user. Ensure that before driving on the road, the driver has had a sufficient amount of sleep and is alert to their surroundings. The danger of driving fatigued and not being alert is understated.
“Driving while fatigued or drowsy is similar to driving under the influence of alcohol in how it compromises your ability to drive. It reduces your alertness and attentiveness.
Key Messages:
- Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions: – Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind on driving. Avoid using mobile phones or engaging in any activities that divert your attention.
- Adhere to Traffic Laws: – Obey speed limits, stop signs, traffic signals, and all road markings. Traffic laws are designed to keep everyone safe and following them is essential.
- Use Safety Gear: – Always wear seat belts, and ensure children are secure in appropriate car seats. Cyclists should wear helmets and other protective gear.
- Drive Sober: – Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving is a leading cause of accidents and fatalities on the road.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: – Constantly scan the road and its surroundings. Look out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Practice Defensive Driving: – Anticipate potential hazards and be prepared to react calmly and safely. Maintain a safe following distance and be cautious of other drivers’ actions.
- Adapt to Road Conditions: – Adjust your driving to suit weather, traffic, and road conditions. Slowdown in adverse conditions such as rain, fog, or heavy traffic.
“Our Commitment: At the BRSC, we are committed to raising awareness about road safety and providing the tools and education needed to keep our roads safe. Through campaigns, workshops, and community initiatives, we strive to instill the importance of being alert and proactive on the road.
“By embracing the theme “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow,” we can collectively make a difference. Let us all commit to being vigilant, responsible, and considerate road users, ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely.
“Remember, your attentiveness today can make the difference between life and death tomorrow. Let’s slow down, drive with care and caution, and don’t drink and drive, Bermuda.”
