SPCA Urges Pet Owners To Ensure Pet Safety
As the summer season continues, the Bermuda SPCA is reminding pet owners about the importance of keeping their pets safe during outdoor activities.
A spokesperson said, “With the heat and increased outdoor time, pets face various risks such as heatstroke, dehydration, and paw pad burns.”
“Tips for Keeping Pets Safe:
- Hydration: Always provide fresh, clean water for your pets, especially when they are outside. Consider carrying a portable water bowl when taking your pet on walks.
- Shade: Ensure your pets have access to shaded areas where they can escape the direct sunlight. Never leave pets in a parked car, as temperatures can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.
- Exercise Caution: Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the temperature is more relaxed.
- Paw Protection: Be mindful of hot pavement, sand, or asphalt, which can burn your pet’s paws. Walk your pets on grass or cooler surfaces whenever possible.
- Watch for Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a more relaxed area, provide water, and seek veterinary care immediately.
- Grooming: Regular grooming helps keep your pet’s coat healthy and free of mats, which can trap heat. Consider a summer trim for long-haired pets, but avoid shaving them down to the skin, as this can increase the risk of sunburn.

Thank you for trying to get the message out….please spread this message on social media. The number of people I see with their dogs out in the heat of the day on hot roads is ridiculous…and when I speak up and say something they are irritated…DOGS CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES….pay attention to them….you can see from their eyes and body language its TOO HOT….stay off the roads and in the shade. Take them out early or late in the day. Take water with you. Do not run then on the lead for lengthy periods and not allow them to stop. FOR GOODNESS SAKES BE SENSIBLE. and for everyone else who is sensible PLEASE speak up when you see it…there is a nice way to deliver the message…you might get the stink eye but that’s ok…at least someone has spoken up for the dog!
