July 29, 2024 | 0 Comments

Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB] will host an event to commemorate the 190th anniversary of emancipation in Bermuda.

A spokesperson said, “It is with great honor and humility that we welcome the wider community to the commemoration of the 190th anniversary of our emancipation here in Bermuda. This week, we gather not only to remember a pivotal moment in our history but to reaffirm our collective commitment to the principles of freedom, equality, and justice for all.

“The significance of this milestone cannot be overstated. Emancipation marked the beginning of a new chapter in Bermuda’s journey—a chapter where the chains of oppression were broken, and the spirit of resilience and hope began to flourish. However, as we celebrate our past achievements, we must also recognize the work that still lies ahead.

“Please join us on July 31st on the steps of City Hall as we collectively acknowledge this milestone. Throughout the month, we have seen several organizations and individuals bring about awareness and education around Emancipation. We are pleased to join the cause and have been proudly endorsing these events. We have been committed to organizing this collaborative event, which involves the participation of:

  • The Department of Culture
  • Human Rights Commission
  • Social Justice Bermuda
  • Islamic Cultural Center
  • Titan Tours
  • Imagine Bermuda
  • Bermuda Is Love
  • Church Community
  • City Singers
  • Robert Sai Emory

“One thing we know is that despite the progress we have made, disparities persist in our society. These indicators of inequity remind us that the fight for true equality is far from over. Each one of us, as Bermudians and residents of this beautiful island, has a crucial role to play in eliminating these disparities. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the ideals of freedom and equality are not just aspirations but realities for everyone.

“This week, as we come together to acknowledge August 1st as our Freedom Day, let us pledge to do our part in advancing the cause of full emancipation. Let us commit to fostering a community where every person is valued, respected, and given equal opportunities to thrive. By working together, we can create a future where justice and equity are the cornerstones of our society.”
