BRSC: “Chance Takers Are Accident Makers”
The Bermuda Road Safety Council emphasizes the importance of cautious driving with their July slogan, “Chance Takers Are Accident Makers,” urging everyone to follow traffic laws and prioritize road safety to prevent accidents and save lives.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Road Safety Council announces its slogan for July – “Chance Takers are Accident Makers”. Every day, we share the roads with our neighbors, friends, and loved ones. These roads are not just thoroughfares for vehicles; they are pathways that connect us, enabling us to fulfill our daily responsibilities and aspirations.
“However, there is an alarming reality that we cannot ignore: the roads can also become places of tragedy when caution is cast aside. This leads us to this months’ theme: “Chance Takers Are Accident Makers.”
“When we talk about road safety, we must recognize that every decision we make behind the wheel has consequences. Taking chances—whether it’s speeding through a red light, texting while driving, or not buckling your helmet—might seem like a shortcut to saving time. However, these seemingly small gambles can have devastating results. A moment’s distraction or a split-second decision to ignore safety rules can lead to accidents that alter lives forever.
“The impact of road accidents extends far beyond the immediate victims. Families are torn apart, and communities grieve the loss of loved ones. The economic burden of accidents is also significant, with costs related to healthcare, emergency services, and property damage adding up quickly. More importantly, the emotional and psychological scars last much longer, often for a lifetime.
“According to the Road Traffic Act 1947 – section 37 “Careless driving and riding without reasonable consideration” it states what constitutes as “without due care” and that driving without due care is an offence. The legal definition of Driving without Due Care and Attention is that you were “allowing your standard of driving to fall below that of a prudent motorist”. Driving in this manner means that you are taking a chance that could ultimately result in an accident.
“It is imperative that each of us takes responsibility for our actions on the road. By adhering to traffic laws, practicing defensive driving, and remaining vigilant, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. This means:
- Respecting speed limits
- Avoiding distractions, such as mobile phones
- Never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Always wearing seatbelts
- Being mindful of pedestrians and cyclists
“As we move forward, I urge everyone to embrace a culture of safety and respect on our roads. Let us not be “chance takers,” but rather, responsible road users who value our own lives and the lives of others. Every time you get behind the wheel, remember that the choices you make can either contribute to a safer community or put it at risk.
