Yesterday, Premier David Burt hosted the annual Premier’s Cup Match Reception at Camden Grounds in Paget.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Premier’s Annual Cup Match Reception has always proven to be a popular precursor to the Annual Classic. In attendance last evening were members of Cabinet and the legislature, as well as Somerset Cricket Club President Richard Scott and St. George’s Cricket Club President Mishael Paynter and their club’s respective teams. SCC Captain Terryn Fray and SGCC Captain Onias Bascome provided remarks in front of attendees, which included club officials, past Cup Match players, family, friends and supporters.”

Speaking at the event the Premier said, Good Evening, members of the Cabinet, members of the legislature; Speaker of the House & Madam President of the Senate, President Richard Scott of Somerset Cricket Club; President Mishael Paynter of St. George’s Cricket Club; Captain Terryn Fray of SCC; Captain Onias Bascome of St. George’s Cricket Club; club officials, cup match legends, family and friends, welcome and thank you for joining me this evening.

“As we gather tonight at Camden for the Annual Cup Match reception, I am honored to welcome Somerset and St. George’s cricket club players. Cup Match is a testament to the power of sports in bringing our community together and celebrating our unique cultural heritage.

“As we prepare to commemorate the 190th anniversary of the emancipation Act, with Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day, we remember the sacrifices and struggles of our ancestors who fought for freedom and equality. We honor the legacy of Mary Prince, whose courageous story helped galvanize the abolition movement in the British territories.

“As a government, we are committed to preserving and supporting the Annual Cup Match Classic, a cherished part of Bermuda’s heritage. We recognize the significant contributions of our community clubs, including Somerset and St. George’s cricket clubs, in promoting sports, community spirit, and cultural pride.

“Tonight, we celebrate not only the excitement of Cup Match but also the values of community, sportsmanship, and camaraderie that it represents. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the club executives, coaches, players, staff, and volunteers of both Somerset and St. George’s cricket clubs for their tireless efforts in making the Cup Match Classic possible.

“As we enjoy the festive atmosphere and good company, let us remember the true spirit of Cup Match: a celebration of our history, our culture, and our people – a holiday not given, but taken as those who came before us said that they would commemorate that day!

“I wish both teams the very best of luck, and I look forward to a thrilling match and a festive atmosphere at the Somerset Cricket Club!

“Thank you, and I wish you all a Happy Emancipation Day, Happy Mary Prince Day, and a Happy and safe Cup Match holiday.”
