Somersfield To Host BEN’s Summer Programme
Somersfield Academy announced the continuation of its community partnership with the Bermuda Education Network [BEN] by hosting the Fortitude Re Summer Learning Programme for the second consecutive year.
A spokesperson said, “The school has continued its commitment to fostering educational development within the local community by donating space for the three-week programme, offering one-to-one reading tutoring, art enrichment, and outdoor play for fourty-four P3 students at its campus in Devonshire.”
“Contributing to the broader Bermuda community through this partnership is a source of great pride for Somersfield Academy,” says Kristen Scott Ndiaye, Development & Marketing Manager.
“Our teaching staff are also benefiting from professional development opportunities. This collaboration has brought new insights, students, and fresh perspectives to our campus, enabling us to fulfil our vision of fostering an inclusive community that nurtures socially conscious, independent learners. We eagerly anticipate continuing and expanding this partnership in the years to come.”
The spokesperson said, “The Summer Learning Programme aims to reduce the number of primary-level students struggling with reading through focused intervention and expert guidance. The programme is entirely free for participating families, thanks to a generous donation from Fortitude Re.”
Rebecca Ausenda, BEN’s Founder and Executive Director, commented, “Children selected for the programme are recommended by their teachers, principals, and reading specialists. Many children benefit from extra support with foundational reading skills and our goal is to provide the boost they need before they fall behind in their overall learning. This is achieved through careful pre-assessment and personalized attention from individual tutors to ensure that every student receives the support they need.”
Kelly Rodday, BEN’s Learning Programme Director, commented, “Our team of eleven reading tutors, four classroom teachers, and six interns received Professional Development training prior to the programme commencing from reading specialist Natalie Roberts, Deputy Principal and reading specialist at St. George’s Prep. Our team ensures that each student receives personalised attention and support.”
The spokesperson said, “Staff from Somersfield Academy play a crucial role in the programme. Kelly Rodday, a primary teacher at the school, leads as the Learning Programme Director. Additionally, Ashley Phipps, Danielle Tannock, Dr. Judith Bartley, Caroline Araujo, and former Somersfield teacher Deonaé Dickinson are contributing as classroom teachers and one-on-one tutors. Somersfield Alumna Morgan Kempe has returned for her third consecutive year in the programme, highlighting the enduring influence of Somersfield’s educational philosophy on both students and staff.
“At the conclusion of the programme, each student receives a comprehensive report that is shared with their respective schools to support ongoing educational development throughout the school year.
